Save for America

Save For America is a school banking program which is designed to strengthen the savings habit in America's youth. Using School Savings Internet software, with adult supervision, students make deposits using the school's computers either before school or during lunch.

State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald entered into a joint venture with the National Save For America program in 1995. The goal of this coordinated effort is encourage as many children in as many schools around the state to either start savings accounts or to make regular deposits to an existing savings or account.

It doesn't matter if the deposit 25 cents or $1.00. The program is designed to get them in the habit of saving. Since the program was introduced in Iowa, Treasurer has visited elementary schools across the state to rally the children to save for their future and to watch them as they make their deposits right in school.

"There are many reasons we should save for our children's future and many more for teaching them to save for themselves. Once our children practice saving on a regular basis, they will be better prepared to face the world as young adults."
